The National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) has launched a comprehensive skills development programme aimed at training 4,000 tractor operators across Nigeria in a major push to strengthen agricultural mechanisation and boost food production.

The initiative is designed to equip participants with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to operate, maintain and manage agricultural machinery efficiently, thereby improving productivity and supporting the country’s drive toward modern farming.

According to NADF, the programme forms part of broader efforts to address the shortage of skilled tractor operators, improve access to mechanised farming services and enhance the efficiency of agricultural operations nationwide.

The training will expose participants to modern tractor operation techniques, routine maintenance, safety procedures and best practices in the use of mechanised equipment. Beneficiaries are also expected to acquire knowledge that will enable them to reduce machine downtime and improve the lifespan of agricultural machinery.

Agricultural experts have long identified mechanisation as a critical component of Nigeria’s efforts to increase crop yields, reduce labour shortages and encourage greater participation of young people in commercial agriculture.

Stakeholders believe that expanding the pool of skilled tractor operators will improve the availability of mechanisation services, particularly for smallholder farmers who often face challenges accessing modern farm equipment during critical planting and harvesting periods.

The programme is also expected to create employment opportunities by developing a new generation of certified tractor operators capable of providing mechanisation services to farming communities across the country.

NADF noted that improving technical capacity in agricultural mechanisation is essential to achieving higher productivity, reducing production costs and strengthening Nigeria’s food security.

Industry stakeholders welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that will contribute to modernising the agricultural sector while supporting government efforts to transform farming into a more profitable and technology-driven enterprise.

They also stressed the importance of complementing operator training with increased investment in tractors, implements, spare parts, maintenance centres and rural infrastructure to maximise the impact of mechanisation across the agricultural value chain.

The programme aligns with ongoing national efforts to improve agricultural productivity through innovation, skills development and greater adoption of modern farming technologies.

Experts further noted that well-trained tractor operators play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient use of agricultural equipment, reducing operational costs and improving farm output.

As Nigeria continues to pursue sustainable agricultural transformation, the training of 4,000 tractor operators is expected to strengthen mechanisation capacity, create jobs and enhance the competitiveness of the country’s agricultural sector.

The initiative underscores NADF’s commitment to building a skilled agricultural workforce capable of supporting increased food production, improving farmers’ access to mechanised services and driving long-term growth in Nigeria’s agricultural economy.
