Billionaire investor Femi Otedola has strengthened his position in First HoldCo Plc after acquiring an additional ₦222.2 billion worth of shares, raising his total ownership in the financial services group to 25.87 percent.

The latest investment further consolidates Otedola’s influence within the company and reinforces investor confidence in the long term prospects of one of Nigeria’s oldest financial institutions. The acquisition follows a series of strategic share purchases over the past few years, during which the businessman has steadily increased his holdings in the company.

Market data showed that the recent transaction involved the purchase of a significant volume of ordinary shares on the Nigerian Exchange, making Otedola the largest individual shareholder in First HoldCo. The move comes at a time when the banking sector is undergoing major transformation driven by regulatory reforms, recapitalisation requirements and renewed efforts to strengthen corporate governance.

Analysts believe the increased stake signals Otedola’s confidence in the company’s growth strategy, particularly as First HoldCo continues to implement reforms aimed at improving profitability, expanding digital banking services and enhancing shareholder value. They noted that the investment could encourage additional institutional and retail investors to increase their exposure to the company’s shares.

The development also reflects growing interest in Nigeria’s banking sector despite prevailing economic challenges. Industry experts say well capitalised financial institutions remain attractive to long term investors because of their ability to benefit from economic recovery, increased lending activities and improved earnings.

First HoldCo has in recent years embarked on several initiatives to reposition its operations, including strengthening risk management, improving operational efficiency and investing in technology to enhance customer experience. The company has also continued to pursue strategies designed to improve returns for shareholders while maintaining regulatory compliance.

Otedola, chairman of First HoldCo, has repeatedly expressed confidence in the institution’s future, emphasising the importance of sound corporate governance, innovation and sustainable growth. His continued investment is widely seen as a vote of confidence in the company’s leadership and strategic direction.

Market watchers expect the latest acquisition to have a positive impact on investor sentiment, with many anticipating stronger market activity around the company’s shares in the coming weeks. The increased ownership also places Otedola in a stronger position to support the group’s long term transformation agenda as Nigeria’s financial sector adapts to changing economic realities.
