The African Development Bank (AfDB) has intensified its engagement with Ethiopia’s private sector as part of efforts to strengthen investment, foster strategic partnerships and accelerate sustainable economic growth in the country. The engagement brought together business leaders, investors, financial institutions and representatives of key industries to explore opportunities for collaboration in sectors critical to Ethiopia’s economic transformation.
Speaking during the meeting, AfDB officials reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to supporting private sector-led development, noting that increased investment and stronger partnerships are essential to driving industrialisation, job creation and economic resilience. The Bank highlighted the private sector as a key engine of growth, innovation and employment, stressing that closer cooperation between development institutions, government and businesses would help unlock Ethiopia’s economic potential.
Discussions focused on expanding investment in priority sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, renewable energy, infrastructure, digital technology and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Participants also explored ways to improve access to finance, strengthen value chains and create a more enabling business environment capable of attracting both domestic and foreign investment.
AfDB representatives noted that the Bank continues to support initiatives that improve private sector competitiveness through financing, technical assistance and policy dialogue aimed at removing barriers to business growth. Business leaders welcomed the engagement, describing it as an important platform for identifying investment opportunities and addressing challenges affecting enterprise development.
They called for sustained collaboration in areas such as infrastructure development, affordable financing, skills development and regulatory reforms to enhance the country’s investment climate. The meeting also highlighted the importance of innovation and digital transformation in improving productivity and expanding market access for Ethiopian businesses.

Participants agreed that stronger partnerships between the public and private sectors would play a crucial role in supporting industrial development, increasing exports and creating quality employment opportunities, particularly for young people and women. AfDB reaffirmed its commitment to mobilising investment and supporting projects that contribute to inclusive and sustainable economic growth across Ethiopia.
The Bank also emphasised the need for continued dialogue with private sector stakeholders to ensure that development interventions respond to market needs and encourage long-term investment. The engagement forms part of AfDB’s broader strategy to strengthen private sector participation across Africa by supporting entrepreneurship, enhancing access to capital and promoting sustainable industrialisation.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that deeper collaboration between the African Development Bank and Ethiopia’s business community would accelerate economic diversification, strengthen resilience and position the country as a competitive destination for regional and international investment.
