Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel has expressed concern over the growing influence of far right parties in Germany and across Europe, warning that their policies could damage the country’s economy and discourage foreign investment.

Speaking at a European Central Bank press conference in Berlin, Nagel questioned the impact of far right ideas on Germany’s society, shared values and economic prospects.

His comments came after the Alternative for Germany (AfD) emerged as the leading party in recent state elections in Saxony Anhalt, campaigning on tighter migration policies and improved relations with Moscow.

Nagel said the political shift could make Germany less attractive to international investors, who may become reluctant to expand their businesses in the country.
