Tanzanian authorities have arrested and charged 51 opposition officials with terrorism related offences over their alleged involvement in organising planned anti government protests, in a move that has intensified political tensions ahead of the country’s elections.

The officials, who are members of the main opposition party CHADEMA, were charged on Monday, July 27, after prosecutors accused them of planning demonstrations that authorities said threatened national security. The accused appeared before a court in Dar es Salaam, where the charges were formally presented.

The opposition has rejected the allegations, describing the arrests as politically motivated and intended to suppress dissent. CHADEMA officials said the planned demonstrations were peaceful and accused the government of using security laws to silence critics.

The Tanzanian government has defended the arrests, maintaining that security agencies acted within the law to prevent violence and protect public order. Authorities have warned that any unlawful protests will be dealt with in accordance with the country’s laws.

Human rights organisations have expressed concern over the use of terrorism charges against political opponents, urging Tanzanian authorities to respect the rights to peaceful assembly and fair trial.

The case is expected to draw increased international attention as Tanzania prepares for upcoming elections, with opposition groups calling for political reforms and greater democratic freedoms.
