The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has released N7.61 billion for the payment of retirement benefits to 4,237 former officers, in a move aimed at addressing pension obligations and improving the welfare of personnel who have exited active service.
The funds were transferred to nine Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) for onward payment into the retirement savings accounts of the beneficiaries. The development is expected to provide financial relief to the retirees after years of dedicated service to the nation.
The payment was disclosed during an engagement between the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and retired officers of the Service, where welfare concerns and the challenges faced by former personnel were discussed.
Adeniyi said the Customs management remains committed to supporting its retirees and ensuring that officers who contributed to the growth of the Service receive their entitlements in line with established pension procedures.
He added that continuous engagement with retired officers would remain a key part of the Service’s approach to identifying and addressing issues affecting their welfare.
The latest intervention comes amid wider concerns over delayed pension payments and the need for stronger support systems for retired public servants.
The Customs Service said it would continue to implement measures that promote better welfare for its former officers while maintaining a strong relationship between serving personnel and retirees. The payment, according to the Service, reflects its commitment to honouring the contributions of officers who spent their careers protecting the nation’s economic interests.
