U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a series of proposed election security measures after ordering the declassification of intelligence documents that he says relate to foreign interference in American elections.
Trump made the announcement during a televised address from the White House, where he said his administration would pursue stricter safeguards aimed at protecting the integrity of future federal elections. The proposals include enhanced voter verification measures, tighter oversight of election infrastructure and expanded federal support for cybersecurity.
The president said the declassified documents contain information about alleged attempts by foreign actors to influence previous U.S. elections. However, he did not present new publicly verified evidence that foreign governments altered election results. U.S. intelligence agencies have previously concluded that while several countries have sought to influence American public opinion through cyber operations and disinformation campaigns, there is no evidence that voting systems were successfully manipulated to change certified election outcomes.
The announcement comes as political parties intensify campaigning ahead of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, with election security expected to remain a central issue. Republican lawmakers welcomed the proposed measures, arguing they would strengthen public confidence in the electoral process. Democratic leaders, however, criticised the announcement, saying existing election systems are secure and warning against repeating claims that could undermine trust in democratic institutions.
Election officials across the United States said they will continue working with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and state authorities to protect voting systems from cyber threats and foreign interference.
Political analysts say the issue is likely to remain at the forefront of national debate as candidates from both major parties seek to convince voters that they can ensure free, fair and secure elections.
