Lecturers in Ogun State-owned polytechnics have threatened to embark on industrial action over alleged unpaid allowances, poor funding and other unresolved welfare issues, calling on the state government to increase monthly subventions to the institutions.
The lecturers, under the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as inadequate government funding and failure to address longstanding concerns affecting staff welfare and the quality of education.
The union reportedly demanded a ₦100m subvention to improve the financial position of the affected institutions and enable them to meet their operational responsibilities.
The lecturers said the existing funding arrangements were insufficient to support academic activities, maintain facilities and provide essential teaching materials.
They also raised concerns over outstanding allowances, salary-related entitlements and other benefits owed to members.
The union warned that failure by the government to address its demands could result in industrial action, potentially disrupting academic activities across the affected institutions.
The development comes amid longstanding concerns about funding challenges in Ogun State-owned polytechnics.
In December 2024, ASUP Zone C Coordinator, Nurudeen Masopa, criticised the state’s polytechnic funding arrangements, noting that some institutions were receiving only ₦5m monthly as subvention.
He also raised concerns over the non-implementation of minimum wage adjustments, salary increments and other staff entitlements.
The union has repeatedly called on the Ogun State Government to improve funding and address issues affecting lecturers and other workers in the institutions.
Adequate funding, according to the union, remains essential to improving teaching conditions, supporting research and ensuring that students receive quality technical education.
The lecturers urged the state government to urgently intervene and resolve the outstanding issues to prevent a breakdown of industrial harmony.
