Merck’s Bravecto Gets US FDA Emergency Approval to Treat Screwworm in Dogs

Merck & Co. has received emergency use authorisation from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Bravecto tablets to treat New World screwworm infestations in dogs and puppies.

The authorisation, issued on November 3, 2026, expands treatment options against the parasite, which can cause severe tissue damage in animals.

The FDA granted the authorisation to Intervet, Merck’s US animal health subsidiary, after reviewing scientific evidence suggesting that Bravecto may be effective against screwworm infestations.

FDA Warns Dog Owners About Symptoms

Although most dogs in the United States remain at low risk, the FDA advised owners in affected areas to monitor their pets, particularly those travelling to or returning from regions where cases have been reported.

Warning signs include visible maggots in wounds and foul-smelling injuries. Owners are encouraged to seek veterinary attention immediately if these symptoms appear.

Prescription Required

Bravecto contains fluralaner, an active ingredient already used in certain flea and tick treatments for dogs.

However, the FDA warned that isoxazoline medicines, the drug class to which Bravecto belongs, have been associated with neurological side effects, including muscle tremors, loss of coordination and seizures.

The medication will remain available only by prescription through licensed veterinarians.

The FDA said the potential benefits of using Bravecto outweigh its risks when administered under the authorised conditions.

The decision provides veterinarians with an additional treatment option as US authorities continue monitoring the New World screwworm threat.
