The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched an investigation into suspected artificial intelligence-generated photographs discovered in Nigeria’s preliminary voters’ register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The commission said some questionable registration records had been flagged during an earlier public display exercise, adding that investigations were ongoing to determine how the suspicious photographs entered the database.
INEC clarified that the register published online on October 26, 2026, was a preliminary document and not the final certified voters’ register. It said corrective measures were underway to address verified irregularities.
The electoral body also noted that it was examining possible technical or procedural lapses associated with the records and would take appropriate action based on its findings.
INEC is expected to complete its verification and data-cleaning processes before certifying the final voters’ register on December 15, 2026.
The development has renewed public attention on the accuracy and credibility of Nigeria’s voter registration process ahead of the next general elections.
