President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed security agencies to intensify efforts to arrest the gunmen who killed prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka and his associate, Adamu Abubakar, in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The victims were shot dead on Monday evening, October 26, in front of the cleric’s residence by two armed men reportedly riding on a motorcycle.

The cleric’s wife, Hajiya Fatima Masussuka, recounted that her husband was preparing to leave for a teaching session with his Islamic pupils when he realised he had forgotten his bag. She said she returned indoors and shortly afterwards heard about four gunshots.

When she came outside, she discovered that her husband had been shot.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu condemned the killings and directed the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

The Katsina State Police Command has deployed tactical and operational teams and commenced an investigation. Police spokesperson DSP Abubakar Sadiq said the command had yet to authenticate reports that the Ansaru terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.

The killings have renewed concerns about insecurity in Katsina State and the need for effective investigations, protection of residents and accountability for attacks on civilians.
