Elon Musk has warned that more than 200 artificial intelligence cloud computing companies could face collapse or consolidation as access to funding tightens, raising fresh concerns about the financial risks surrounding the global AI investment boom.
Musk said lenders were increasingly reluctant to finance companies that depend heavily on artificial intelligence data centres for revenue, leaving specialist cloud providers vulnerable to rising borrowing costs and mounting investment demands.
The companies, known as neoclouds, provide computing infrastructure powered by high-performance chips used to train and run AI systems. Their business models require substantial spending on advanced processors and data centres, making continued access to capital essential for expansion.
Musk predicted that many of these firms would struggle to survive the funding squeeze. He also claimed that SpaceX had secured $40 billion in debt financing to purchase graphics processing units for its AI operations, although reports indicated that negotiations over the deal were still ongoing.
The warning weighed on investor sentiment on Monday, October 26, with CoreWeave shares falling 2.4% in pre-market trading. Nebius was heading for a 2.1% decline, while Iren dropped 1.9%.
CoreWeave has faced growing investor concerns over whether its heavy investment in AI infrastructure will generate sufficient returns. Its shares have lost about 60% over the past year.
The development highlights a growing challenge for the AI industry: companies must demonstrate sustainable revenue and profitability as the cost of building and operating computing infrastructure continues to rise.
