Former Nigerian football star Victor Ezeji has congratulated Godwin Obaje on reaching the 100-goal milestone, saying he would be delighted to see the current generation surpass his own records.
Obaje’s landmark has generated widespread praise within Nigerian domestic football, with his achievement renewing conversations about consistency, longevity and excellence in the game.
Ezeji, who retired from professional football 11 years ago, said records should not be viewed as permanent and encouraged Obaje to continue pushing the boundaries.
“No records are there forever; records are meant to be broken,” Ezeji said.
“I stopped playing 11 years ago and would love to see my record broken. I wish Obaje well and hope he breaks it, and if not, that’s also fine.”
Ezeji’s comments highlight the strong connection between different generations of Nigerian footballers, with the former star embracing the prospect of younger players surpassing the achievements of those before them.
Obaje reached the century mark in the domestic league, joining an elite group of Nigerian players to achieve the feat and further strengthening his reputation as one of the country’s prolific home-based strikers.
The milestone represents another significant chapter in Obaje’s career and provides fresh motivation as he continues to chase more goals and establish his legacy.
For Ezeji, however, seeing his records eventually broken would represent progress rather than a loss of legacy.
As Obaje continues his career, attention will now focus on how far he can extend his scoring record and whether he can set a new benchmark for future generations to chase.
