Lionel Messi has officially brought his 21-year international career to an end, making his final appearance for Argentina in a farewell friendly against Benin at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
The 39-year-old had announced his international retirement after Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, saying he had given everything he could to his country.
About 85,000 supporters filled the Monumental for the emotional farewell, while tributes poured in from football figures in Nigeria and around the world.
Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi described Messi as one of football’s greatest players and said his absence would be felt across international football.
Former Nigeria captain Austin Okocha was equally effusive, declaring: “Messi is on another planet; he’s art. He was born to play football.”
Nollywood actress Uche Jombo also paid tribute, saying Messi helped an entire generation fall in love with football and celebrate the highs and lows of his remarkable journey.
Brazilian star Neymar, Messi’s former Barcelona teammate, thanked him for making football even more enjoyable, describing it as an honour to have played alongside him.
The farewell also carried a Nigerian connection. Benin assistant coach Tunde Adelakun was present when Messi inspired Argentina to defeat Nigeria’s Flying Eagles in the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup final.
Benin coach Gernot Rohr, who faced Messi while managing Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup, also hailed the Argentine’s extraordinary qualities.
Messi leaves international football as Argentina’s record appearance-maker and leading scorer, with 207 caps and 125 goals before the farewell match.
His honours include the 2022 World Cup, Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, the 2022 Finalissima, Olympic gold and the 2005 U-20 World Cup.
