Adamawa 2027: Binani fires back at Babachir Lawal, denies anti-party allegations

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, governorship candidate in Adamawa State, Senator Aishatu Dahiru Binani, has rejected allegations by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, that she and other North East governorship candidates are working against the party’s interests ahead of the 2027 elections.

Binani, through her Campaign Organisation’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Mathias Yohanna, said she would not be intimidated by what it described as personal attacks and indecent language from Lawal.

The campaign explained that Binani’s position on the leadership of the NDC in the North was reached during a democratically convened meeting involving governorship candidates in the region.

According to the campaign, the candidates collectively agreed to recognise former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as the party’s leader in the Northern region.

The campaign accused Lawal of pursuing division rather than building unity within the party, insisting that leadership should be based on consultation, mutual respect and democratic consensus.

It also urged the national leadership of the NDC to intervene in the dispute and caution Lawal against comments capable of further deepening divisions within the party.

The controversy began after six NDC governorship candidates in the North East rejected Lawal’s appointment as the party’s regional leader, citing inadequate consultation.

Lawal subsequently accused Binani of working to undermine the NDC’s presidential ticket and alleged that she was acting in the interest of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Binani’s camp, however, denied the allegations, maintaining that its actions were aimed at protecting internal democracy and promoting unity within the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
