Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, September 21, 2026, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe dismissed reports of an impending electricity tariff increase.

Tegbe said the government’s priority was to improve electricity supply, strengthen the financial stability of the power sector, and address infrastructure challenges rather than impose additional costs on consumers.

He disclosed that electricity generation and transmission had exceeded 5,000 megawatts in recent weeks, compared with between 3,700MW and 4,700MW before June. He also reported that generation reached a peak of 5,330MW in August and September.

The minister acknowledged that improvements in national generation had not translated into reliable electricity for every community. He said the government would focus on stabilising transmission corridors, improving metering, and addressing outstanding debts in the power sector.

Tegbe reaffirmed that the Federal Government currently has no plan to increase electricity tariffs.
