Military officials, diplomats and security experts at China’s Xiangshan Forum have raised concerns that increasingly autonomous artificial intelligence could heighten risks on the battlefield and increase the chance of miscalculation between major powers.
More than 2,000 delegates from about 100 countries attended the three-day defence conference, where speakers warned that AI is compressing military decision-making while autonomous weapons and drones are changing the nature of modern warfare.
International officials called for stronger safeguards and continued human control over decisions involving the use of force. Concerns also focused on misinformation, which could undermine public trust and complicate governments’ responses during a crisis.
The discussions come as the United States and China prepare for high-level talks on AI and security. Experts from both countries have proposed measures including limits on AI involvement in nuclear systems, human oversight of major cyber operations and improved communication channels to prevent AI-related incidents from escalating.
