Fresh cracks have appeared within President Bola Tinubu’s political camp as several All Progressives Congress (APC) governors openly resisted the proposed “Rainbow Coalition,” a broad alliance designed to attract politicians from across party lines ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sources within the ruling party revealed that while Tinubu’s strategists see the coalition as a way to consolidate power and expand APC’s reach, many governors believe it threatens the party’s internal cohesion. They argue that bringing in figures from rival parties under the coalition banner could dilute APC’s identity and weaken loyalty among its core supporters.

The Rainbow Coalition, reportedly championed by influential allies of Tinubu, is intended to serve as a platform for inclusivity, bridging divides across Nigeria’s political spectrum. However, its unveiling has sparked heated debates. Some governors insist that the APC should focus on strengthening its structures and delivering governance rather than experimenting with alliances that may collapse under conflicting interests.

Political analysts note that the pushback reflects deeper tensions within the APC. Governors, who control grassroots mobilisation, fear losing influence if external actors are allowed to dominate the coalition. “This is not just about strategy; it is about power balance within the ruling party,” one analyst observed.

Supporters of the coalition argue that Nigeria’s complex political environment requires broad alliances to ensure stability and inclusiveness. They believe the Rainbow Coalition could reduce tensions, foster dialogue, and create a united front capable of addressing national challenges.

Opponents, however, warn that the coalition could become a Trojan horse, allowing opposition figures to infiltrate APC ranks and destabilize the party from within. They point to past coalition experiments in Nigerian politics that failed to deliver lasting unity, cautioning that history may repeat itself.

Observers believe the clash between Tinubu’s camp and APC governors could shape the party’s electoral strategy in 2027. If the coalition is embraced, APC may broaden its appeal but risk internal fragmentation. If rejected, the party may double down on loyalty and discipline, focusing on consolidating its base rather than expanding outward.

The debate underscores the high stakes of the 2027 elections, which many see as pivotal for Nigeria’s democratic trajectory. As the Rainbow Coalition continues to divide opinion, the ruling party faces the challenge of balancing inclusivity with cohesion, a test that could determine its strength at the polls.
