Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that governments around the world are not prepared for the rapid changes artificial intelligence could bring to society.
Speaking in an interview with Reuters, Gates said policymakers are struggling to keep pace with advances in AI, raising concerns about job displacement, cybersecurity threats and growing dependence on AI-powered companions.
Despite his concerns, Gates said AI could have significant benefits, particularly in healthcare, education and agriculture. The Gates Foundation has announced plans to invest at least $1 billion over the next two years to expand access to AI and support its use in developing countries.
Gates also called for greater cooperation between major powers, particularly the United States and China, arguing that governments need to work together to address the risks while ensuring the technology’s benefits are widely shared.
