The Northern Elders Progressive Group has praised the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, for overseeing what it described as a peaceful and credible rerun primary election for the Zamfara North Senatorial District.
The group said the emergence of incumbent Senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura as the party’s candidate reflected the APC leadership’s commitment to internal democracy, fairness and transparency. The rerun primary was held on Monday, November 2, following a Court of Appeal judgment in Sokoto that upheld a Federal High Court decision nullifying the party’s earlier primary election for the senatorial district.
The legal challenge was filed by APC aspirant Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, who questioned the conduct of the previous exercise over alleged irregularities. Announcing the results, the Chairman of the APC Zamfara North Senatorial District Primary Election Committee, Dr Auwal Abdullahi Aliyu, declared Kaura the winner with 49,176 votes, while his challenger, Tijjani Yahaya Kaura, secured 9,628 votes.
Speaking with journalists in Kaduna on Tuesday, the group’s North-West Executive Secretary, Abbas Sarki, said Yilwatda demonstrated good leadership by allowing the committee to conduct the exercise independently without interference from him or other members of the party’s National Working Committee.
Sarki attributed the successful conduct of the primary to the national chairman’s neutrality, humility and maturity. He said Yilwatda created an environment that allowed the electoral committee to carry out its responsibilities and deliver a transparent outcome. The group’s executive secretary added that the chairman’s commitment to ensuring a fair process had strengthened confidence in the party’s democratic structures.
According to Sarki, reports from the group’s monitoring team indicated that the exercise was conducted fairly and that the committee enjoyed the independence needed to perform its duties, despite alleged attempts by some individuals to disrupt the process. The group also praised President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and support for the APC in the North-West, particularly in security, economic growth and infrastructure development.
It urged political stakeholders in Zamfara State to promote unity and cooperation, noting that internal harmony would be important in strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Congratulating Kaura on his emergence as the APC candidate, the group called on other aspirants to set aside their differences and support him. Sarki said collective support for the party’s candidate would be important to the APC’s chances in the forthcoming general elections.
