The Nigeria Police Force and the National Peace Committee, led by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, have stepped up efforts to prevent rising political tension and inflammatory statements ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The police said they had commenced investigations into controversial remarks allegedly made by some political actors, including the Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba, Kuje Area Council Chairman, Samuel Shekwolo, and Senator Francis Fadahunsi of Osun East.

The National Peace Committee has also activated a situation room and an Electoral Offences Tracking System to monitor campaign activities, violations of the political accord and other conduct that could threaten the electoral process.

The committee said it was documenting both violent and non violent incidents involving political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders, with relevant cases to be forwarded to the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission for action.

The police also warned political actors against making inciting statements, stressing that such comments relating to the electoral process could constitute a criminal offence.

The Force said 154 people arrested during the August 15 Osun State governorship election were still under investigation.

The National Peace Committee urged political parties and candidates to focus on issue based campaigns and avoid hate speech, threats, intimidation and violence.

The renewed efforts come amid growing concerns that political tensions could escalate as parties intensify mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
