For decades, Mr T was one of the most recognisable faces in popular culture, known for his gold chains, distinctive hairstyle, muscular physique and unforgettable catchphrase.

But behind the tough image was a man who says his ambitions were never centred on Hollywood, wealth or celebrity.

At 74, the actor and former wrestler, born Lawrence Tureaud, is opening up about the less familiar parts of his life as a new Netflix documentary revisits his extraordinary journey from poverty on Chicago’s South Side to international fame.

Mr T says his upbringing shaped almost everything that followed. Raised in a large family by his mother after his father left when he was young, he grew up in difficult financial circumstances but credits his mother with teaching him discipline, education and faith.

He has also explained why he changed his name to Mr T at the age of 18. Having witnessed members of his family being addressed disrespectfully because of their race, he wanted the first word people used when addressing him to be “Mr”.

His path to fame was far from conventional.

After serving in the US Army’s military police corps and receiving an honourable discharge, he worked as a bouncer and later became a bodyguard for celebrities including Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Steve McQueen and Muhammad Ali.

His appearance, including the gold chains he wore around his neck, became part of a carefully developed identity. Mr T has said the jewellery carried a deeper meaning for him, representing a transformation of the symbolism of chains from slavery into something associated with wealth and strength.

His big break came in 1982 when Sylvester Stallone cast him as Clubber Lang in Rocky III. Despite having no previous professional acting experience, his performance turned him into an international star.

He followed that success with his role as BA Baracus in The A Team, cementing his place as one of the defining personalities of 1980s television.

His popularity soon extended beyond film and television. He became a major wrestling attraction and appeared alongside Hulk Hogan at the first WrestleMania in 1985, while his image was used on toys, cereal, clothing and other merchandise.

Yet Mr T insists that fame was never his ultimate destination.

He says his main ambition was to provide a better life for his mother, including buying her a home and giving her the kind of clothes she had never been able to afford.

Once he achieved that goal, he felt he had accomplished what mattered most.

Mr T says he was already considering leaving entertainment when producers approached him about The A Team. Rather than seeing another television opportunity as the beginning of a new career, he viewed it as something that could provide him with the freedom and resources to pursue other priorities.

His faith has remained central to that outlook.

Mr T studied philosophy and theology as a young man and has continued to emphasise religion, education and service throughout his life. He says his years of success gave him an opportunity to support homeless people and contribute to his community rather than simply accumulate more wealth.

That philosophy has also shaped his attitude towards money.

Despite becoming a global celebrity, Mr T says he never pursued wealth for its own sake and has questioned the idea that financial success should be the measure of a person’s life.

He is also critical of the new documentary, arguing that it places too much emphasis on the violent hardman persona associated with his public image while giving insufficient attention to his religious beliefs, charitable work and personal philosophy.

For Mr T, the public character was only part of the story.

He remains proud of the career that made him famous, but appears increasingly comfortable with life away from the spotlight. He says he has no desire to return simply for another pay cheque and believes the money he earned has given him the freedom to concentrate on what he considers more important.

Now, rather than chasing another role or another deal, Mr T says he is focused on his faith, family and service.

His message is strikingly different from the image that made him famous: the man who once played some of television and cinema’s toughest characters now says he has little left to prove.

“I am complete,” he says.
