Niger’s military junta remains in control of the country following an attempted coup in the capital, Niamey, but the situation remains tense amid concerns over divisions within the armed forces.

The attempted mutiny began on August 29 when a group of soldiers launched attacks on key military and government installations, including Air Base 101 at Diori Hamani International Airport and areas around the presidential palace.

The mutineers briefly took control of the military base and reportedly targeted other strategic locations, while state television and radio broadcasts were temporarily disrupted.

Security forces loyal to junta leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani eventually regained control of the affected areas after several hours of fighting. Dozens of soldiers were reportedly killed or arrested following the clashes.

The attempted coup represents a significant challenge to Tchiani’s government, which seized power in July 2023. Analysts say the unrest reflects growing frustration within sections of the military over worsening jihadist violence and the government’s handling of the security crisis.

Russia’s Africa Corps reportedly provided support to Nigerien forces during the operation to suppress the mutiny, further highlighting Niger’s growing military partnership with Moscow.

Although authorities have restored control in Niamey, the incident has exposed possible divisions within Niger’s security establishment and raised fresh questions about the stability of the junta.
