Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries has raised N26.7 billion through a fixed rate bond issuance to strengthen its manufacturing capacity and accelerate the expansion of local pharmaceutical production in Nigeria.

The Series 1 Fixed Rate Bond, issued through Emzor Pharma Funding SPV Plc, carries a 19 percent coupon and has a five year tenor. The transaction forms part of a broader N40 billion bond issuance programme designed to provide long term funding for the company’s operations and expansion plans.

The successful fundraising comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to reduce its dependence on imported medicines and pharmaceutical raw materials, particularly active pharmaceutical ingredients used in the production of essential drugs.

A significant portion of the proceeds will support the completion of Emzor’s active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing facility in Sagamu, Ogun State. The project is expected to become West Africa’s first full scale antimalarial API manufacturing facility, representing a major step towards increasing domestic pharmaceutical production.

The facility is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to produce critical inputs locally rather than relying heavily on overseas suppliers. This could help reduce exposure to international supply chain disruptions, foreign exchange pressures and rising import costs that have affected the pharmaceutical industry in recent years.

The bond is Emzor’s second domestic bond issuance and attracted strong investor participation, with the offer reportedly oversubscribed. The response highlights growing investor interest in financing indigenous companies operating in strategic sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Beyond the pharmaceutical industry, the transaction also demonstrates the increasing role of Nigeria’s debt capital market in providing long term financing for productive businesses. Companies with viable expansion plans can use the market to raise substantial funding without relying solely on conventional bank financing.

Emzor plans to deploy the funds towards working capital requirements, debt refinancing and the expansion of its manufacturing operations. The financing is expected to provide the company with additional capacity to increase production and strengthen its position within Nigeria’s pharmaceutical value chain.

The development is significant for Nigeria’s healthcare sector, where dependence on imported pharmaceutical products and raw materials has remained a major concern. Greater domestic manufacturing capacity could improve the availability of essential medicines while supporting local employment, technology transfer and industrial development.

The completion of the API facility could also create opportunities for Nigeria to develop a stronger pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem, with locally produced inputs supporting manufacturers of finished medicines.

The investment further aligns with the broader push for economic diversification and import substitution. Strengthening local production of essential healthcare products can reduce pressure on foreign exchange demand while keeping more value within the domestic economy.

For investors, the successful bond issuance demonstrates that well structured corporate debt instruments can attract substantial capital even as businesses operate in challenging economic conditions. For manufacturers, it could provide an example of how the capital market can be leveraged to finance long term industrial projects.

As Emzor progresses with the expansion, the company’s ability to complete the API facility and translate the new funding into higher production capacity will be closely watched. If successful, the project could mark an important milestone in Nigeria’s drive towards greater pharmaceutical self sufficiency and a more resilient domestic healthcare supply chain.
