Twelve people have been killed and 10 others seriously injured after a Polish tourist bus crashed on a motorway in Hungary early Sunday.

The bus, carrying 57 passengers and two drivers, reportedly left the M3 motorway near Mezőkeresztes, about 90 miles east of Budapest, before plunging into a ditch and overturning at around 1 a.m. local time.

Hungarian police said preliminary information indicated that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The driver was subsequently taken into custody as investigations into the cause of the crash continued.

Emergency responders rescued passengers from the badly damaged vehicle, while those injured were transported to hospitals for treatment.

All the passengers were Polish citizens, according to Poland’s foreign ministry. The group had travelled from Poland’s southeastern Podkarpackie region and were returning from a pilgrimage in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Polish officials expressed condolences to the families of the victims, while Hungarian authorities also commended emergency services involved in the rescue operation.

The crash remains under investigation.
