Progressive candidate Abdul El Sayed has narrowly defeated centrist rival Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, a closely watched contest that highlighted growing divisions within the Democratic Party over its future direction.

With about 95% of ballots counted, El Sayed secured 48.7% of the vote against Stevens’ 47.3%, according to preliminary results.

A public health professor and former gubernatorial candidate, El Sayed campaigned on reducing corporate influence in politics, expanding healthcare access and addressing housing affordability. Backed by prominent progressives including Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, he has also been outspoken in criticising Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, a position that resonated with many voters in Michigan’s large Arab American community.

Stevens, endorsed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, presented herself as an experienced legislator focused on manufacturing, jobs and lowering living costs. Her campaign received substantial financial backing from outside groups, including the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

The primary exposed broader tensions within the Democratic Party between its progressive and moderate wings. Republicans are expected to portray El Sayed as too far left as they prepare for the general election, where he is likely to face Republican Mike Rogers.

Speaking to supporters, El Sayed called for party unity ahead of November, arguing that defeating Republicans would require Democrats to move beyond the divisions of the primary campaign.
