Suspected bandits have killed one person and abducted 31 others during a deadly attack on Shuwaki community in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, further highlighting the persistent insecurity affecting parts of Nigeria’s North-West.

The attack, which occurred over the weekend, left several residents fleeing for safety as the gunmen reportedly stormed the community, shooting sporadically and forcing dozens of people into the surrounding bush.

Local sources said the assailants initially abducted 32 residents but later released an elderly woman who was unable to keep pace with the group, leaving 31 victims still in captivity. At least seven other residents were reportedly injured during the assault and are receiving medical attention.

The latest incident has sparked renewed concerns among residents, who have continued to call on security agencies to intensify operations against armed groups operating in rural communities across the state.

Community leaders appealed to the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance and deploy additional personnel to vulnerable areas to prevent further attacks and secure the release of those still being held by the attackers.

As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement confirming the casualty and abduction figures. However, efforts to track the assailants and rescue the abducted victims were said to be ongoing.

The attack underscores the continuing security challenges facing Katsina State, where banditry, kidnapping and violent attacks have remained a major concern despite ongoing military and security operations.
