Proceedings in India’s Parliament were suspended on Tuesday after opposition lawmakers staged protests over a nationwide examination controversy, piling fresh political pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government.

Opposition members disrupted both houses of Parliament, demanding accountability over alleged irregularities in national recruitment and entrance examinations. The repeated protests forced the suspension of proceedings as lawmakers shouted slogans and called for a broader investigation into the handling of the exams.

The protests follow growing public anger over allegations of question paper leaks, exam malpractice and administrative failures affecting thousands of students seeking admission to universities and government jobs. Demonstrations have been held in several cities, with student groups calling for cancelled examinations to be rerun and those responsible held accountable.

Opposition parties accused the government of failing to protect the integrity of the examination system, arguing that repeated controversies have undermined public confidence in one of the country’s most important pathways to higher education and public employment. They urged the government to ensure greater transparency and strengthen safeguards against future leaks.

The Modi government has acknowledged concerns over examination security and said it is taking steps to tighten oversight. Officials have announced investigations into alleged paper leaks and promised tougher penalties for those involved in organised cheating and examination fraud.

Political analysts said the issue has become one of the most significant domestic challenges facing the government, particularly among young voters, as millions of students compete each year for limited university places and government jobs. The controversy has also intensified debate over reforms to India’s examination and recruitment systems.
