The Delhi High Court has permitted environmentalist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk to be transferred from a government hospital to a private medical facility, following concerns over his health while in judicial custody.

The court issued the order after hearing a petition seeking Wangchuk’s transfer, with his legal team arguing that he required specialised medical care. The judges directed authorities to facilitate the transfer while ensuring that all necessary security arrangements remained in place.

Wangchuk, a prominent climate activist from Ladakh, was taken into custody after participating in protests calling for greater constitutional protections and environmental safeguards for the Himalayan region. His detention has drawn criticism from opposition politicians, rights groups and civil society organisations.

During the hearing, Wangchuk’s lawyers told the court that his health had deteriorated and that treatment at a private hospital was medically necessary. Government lawyers said authorities would comply with the court’s directive while maintaining appropriate custodial supervision.

The Delhi High Court emphasised that every person in custody is entitled to adequate medical treatment and that health considerations must be given due priority. The court did not comment on the merits of the criminal proceedings against Wangchuk, which remain pending.

Supporters welcomed the ruling, describing it as an important step in safeguarding Wangchuk’s health, while authorities said they would implement the order without delay. The case continues to attract national attention because of Wangchuk’s advocacy on environmental conservation, sustainable development and the rights of people in Ladakh.

Further hearings are expected as the court continues to consider petitions related to Wangchuk’s detention and the ongoing legal proceedings.
