Five people died after entering the Ohio River in an attempt to rescue a struggling swimmer, authorities said, in a tragedy that unfolded as rescuers searched the water for multiple victims.

The incident began when one person experienced difficulty in the river, prompting several others to enter the water in an effort to help. The rescue attempt quickly turned into a mass drowning as strong currents overwhelmed those involved. Emergency crews later recovered the victims’ bodies.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred on Monday and involved family members and bystanders who entered the river one after another in an attempt to save the struggling swimmer. Authorities said five people died, while another person survived after being pulled from the water.

Sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and dive teams responded to the scene, launching an extensive search and rescue operation. Officials said the recovery effort continued for several hours before all of the victims were accounted for.

Authorities have not released the identities of the victims pending notification of their families. Investigators are working to determine the exact sequence of events, although officials said there was no indication of foul play.

The tragedy has prompted renewed warnings from emergency officials about the dangers of rivers, where strong currents, sudden drop offs and changing water conditions can quickly overwhelm even experienced swimmers. Authorities urged the public to avoid entering the water to conduct rescues and instead call emergency services and use flotation devices whenever possible.

The sheriff’s office expressed condolences to the victims’ families and thanked first responders who took part in the difficult recovery operation.
