Iran has announced the suspension of key commitments under its recent nuclear understanding with the United States and has further restricted access for international nuclear inspectors, accusing Washington of violating the agreement through renewed military action.
Iranian officials said the decision was taken after the United States resumed strikes on Iranian targets, arguing that Washington had failed to uphold its obligations under the ceasefire framework brokered in June. Tehran said it would no longer implement several provisions of the agreement while focusing on national defence.
Speaking to reporters, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran had suspended its commitments because the United States had already breached the memorandum. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei also indicated that there were currently no plans to resume negotiations, adding that Iran’s priority was responding to the evolving security situation.
The move includes tighter restrictions on access for international nuclear inspectors, further complicating efforts by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to monitor Iran’s nuclear programme. The IAEA has repeatedly warned that limited access reduces its ability to verify Iran’s nuclear activities and maintain oversight of enriched uranium stockpiles.
The latest development marks another setback for diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between Washington and Tehran. The ceasefire framework, negotiated in Islamabad, was intended to halt hostilities and create conditions for broader negotiations, but has come under increasing strain following renewed military exchanges and disagreements over its implementation.
Analysts say Iran’s decision could further heighten concerns over regional stability and complicate future diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations on its nuclear programme. Western governments have urged Tehran to continue cooperating with the IAEA, while Iran insists that any return to full compliance depends on the United States honouring its own commitments under the agreement.
