Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has unveiled a statue in honour of the late literary icon, Chinua Achebe, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to preserving the legacy of one of Nigeria’s greatest writers while creating opportunities for emerging talents in the creative sector.
The statue, dedicated to Achebe’s remarkable contributions to literature, culture and global recognition of African storytelling, was unveiled as part of efforts to celebrate the enduring impact of the renowned author whose works continue to influence generations across the world.
Speaking at the event, Soludo described Achebe as a symbol of excellence, integrity and intellectual depth, noting that his writings transformed the perception of Africa on the global literary stage.
The governor said Achebe’s legacy extends beyond books, stressing that the late author represented the power of knowledge, culture and creativity in shaping society.
Soludo said his administration would continue to invest in initiatives that encourage young people to develop their talents in writing, arts, technology and other creative fields.
He noted that nurturing future literary figures requires deliberate support through education, cultural programmes and platforms that allow young creatives to showcase their abilities.
According to him, Anambra has produced several outstanding intellectuals and creative minds, and the state remains committed to creating an environment where future generations can achieve similar global recognition.
Achebe, who was born in Ogidi, Anambra State, remains one of Africa’s most celebrated authors, best known for his landmark novel “Things Fall Apart,” which has been translated into several languages and studied worldwide.
The governor said the celebration of Achebe’s legacy should inspire young Nigerians to embrace excellence, preserve their cultural identity and contribute positively to society through creativity and innovation.
He added that the statue would serve as a reminder to residents, visitors and young people of the importance of knowledge, storytelling and cultural preservation.
The event attracted government officials, literary enthusiasts, traditional leaders, academics and members of the creative community, who praised the initiative as a fitting tribute to a man whose works brought African experiences to international audiences.
Participants highlighted Achebe’s role in promoting African literature and challenging stereotypes about the continent through his powerful storytelling and deep understanding of society.
