A fire outbreak has destroyed 110 structures at Kofar Ruwa Timber Market in Kano metropolis, leaving traders with significant losses.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed that the incident occurred on Saturday, October 31, affecting 75 permanent buildings and 35 temporary structures across different sections of the market.
The Service’s Public Relations Officer, PFS Kabiru Isah Jafaru, said firefighters received a distress call at about 7:39 a.m. from a timber dealer identified as Alhaji Abba.
He said personnel from various fire stations across Kano metropolis were immediately deployed to the scene, where they found flames spreading through several sections of the market.
Jafaru said firefighters eventually brought the inferno under control and prevented it from spreading to other parts of the market.
The cause of the fire and the total value of property destroyed had not been established as of the time of reporting.
The Executive Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, commended the firefighters for their response and urged traders and business owners to adopt appropriate fire-safety measures.
The Service also advised the public to exercise extra caution as the harmattan season approaches, when dry and windy conditions may increase the risk of fire outbreaks.
The incident adds to concerns over fire safety in Kano’s commercial centres, where many traders depend on daily business activities to support their families and livelihoods. Improved safety measures, accessible firefighting equipment and regular inspection of electrical installations remain important in reducing the risk of similar disasters.
