The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Taraba State has intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections, focusing on security coordination, electoral logistics, technological readiness and the neutrality of election officials.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Sa’ad Umar Idris, outlined the measures during meetings with electoral officials, stakeholders and security agencies held between October 17 and 20, 2026.
The engagements focused on implementing the commission’s Election Project Plan, improving Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection and strengthening preparations across the state’s 16 local government areas.
Idris emphasised the importance of professionalism and impartiality, warning electoral officials against political partisanship. He said proven violations of the commission’s neutrality rules would attract disciplinary action.
The election roadmap also prioritises the readiness of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), early recruitment and training of ad-hoc personnel, and timely distribution of election materials.
At a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security on October 20, security agencies agreed to strengthen joint deployments across the 16 INEC local government offices and 168 registration areas.
The committee also resolved to improve intelligence gathering, identify potential security flashpoints and reinforce protection for INEC facilities, electoral personnel, collation centres and election materials.
Security agencies are expected to maintain order at PVC collection centres while ensuring voters can access the facilities without intimidation or obstruction.
The commission also called for sustained collaboration among political parties, civil society organisations, traditional institutions, the media and community leaders.
Early security assessments and logistical planning can help identify potential challenges before election day. Effective implementation, transparent procedures and impartial security operations will be important to protecting voters’ rights and public confidence in the 2027 elections.
