Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged state governments to address electricity challenges in their jurisdictions and take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Electricity Act 2023.

Shettima made the call at a national stakeholders workshop on electricity reforms in Abuja, where he stressed the need for states to develop functional electricity markets and attract private investment.

He said reliable electricity supply was essential for industrial growth, economic development and improved living standards, urging state governments to take practical steps towards addressing power shortages.

The vice president noted that the Electricity Act 2023 had created opportunities for states to participate actively in electricity generation, transmission, distribution and regulation.

He encouraged state governments to establish regulatory institutions, develop their energy resources and create an enabling environment for private investors to participate in the power sector.

Shettima also highlighted the potential of renewable energy, gas and hydroelectric power in different parts of the country, saying states could use their available resources to improve electricity access.

He stressed that government funding alone would not be sufficient to address Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure challenges, adding that private sector participation was necessary to expand investment and improve service delivery.

The vice president called for stronger cooperation between federal and state governments, electricity regulators and other stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the law.

He said coordinated efforts would help states develop sustainable electricity markets, improve power supply and support economic activities.
