Super Falcons interim coach Augustine Eguavoen says Nigeria have moved on from their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations disappointment and are focused on winning Olympic gold as they prepare for a third-round qualifying showdown with Morocco.
The 10-time African champions booked their place in the next round with a commanding 5-0 victory over Comoros in Tuesday’s second leg in Ikenne, sealing a 7-0 aggregate triumph.
Eguavoen said the team had collectively agreed to put their WAFCON setback behind them and concentrate on securing a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
“At the first meeting we had, we collectively agreed that we put the WAFCON disappointment behind us and set our eyes on the gold medal in the Olympics,” he said.
The coach acknowledged that the challenges would increase as the qualifying campaign progressed but expressed confidence in Nigeria’s squad depth, quality and support.
“Going forward, we expect to meet tougher oppositions, no doubt about that. Super Falcons are number one in Africa. We have the quality, we have the personnel, we have the support,” Eguavoen added.
He also praised the players for translating their training efforts into an impressive performance against Comoros.
“I am very, very happy. Congratulations to the girls. They made my day,” he said.
However, the emphatic victory was overshadowed by an injury to captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was forced off in the first half following a collision. Eguavoen confirmed she was being taken to hospital for an MRI scan to assess the injury.
The coach also commended substitute Blessing Okpe, who assisted Toni Payne’s second goal and won the penalty converted by Christy Ucheibe.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to Morocco as they continue their pursuit of Olympic qualification.
