Africa has been urged to strengthen cooperation among governments, private investors, financial institutions, researchers and innovators to develop practical solutions to climate change and accelerate the continent’s transition towards sustainable development.

The call comes amid growing concerns over the impact of flooding, drought, food insecurity and environmental degradation on African communities, alongside persistent challenges in providing reliable electricity and clean cooking facilities.

The Convener of the Africa Climate Forum, Professor George Nwangwu, made the appeal at the fourth edition of the forum in Abuja, where stakeholders examined ways to turn climate commitments into tangible development outcomes.

The gathering, held under the theme “Implementing in Lockstep: Public-Private Action for Green Outcomes,” emphasised the need to move beyond policy declarations towards implementation, investment and measurable improvements in people’s livelihoods.

Call for Continental Collaboration

Nwangwu stressed that Africa needed a coordinated platform capable of connecting policy decisions, investment opportunities, technological innovation and practical climate solutions across countries.

He argued that the continent could achieve more by bringing together public institutions, businesses, development finance organisations and innovators to address shared environmental challenges.

According to him, governments cannot provide all the funding required to implement climate projects, making private-sector investment, entrepreneurship and innovative financing essential to closing the gap.

He also identified high financing costs, currency risks, regulatory uncertainty, inadequate project preparation and limited access to long-term capital as major obstacles to delivering climate initiatives.

The proposed approach would encourage stakeholders to share expertise, develop bankable projects and coordinate investments capable of producing measurable environmental and economic benefits.

Climate Challenges Threaten Development

Across Africa, climate-related pressures affect agriculture, water availability, infrastructure, public health and energy access.

Flooding can destroy homes, roads and farmlands, while prolonged droughts threaten crop production, livestock and rural livelihoods. Environmental degradation also places additional pressure on communities whose incomes depend on natural resources.

These challenges demonstrate the importance of integrating climate action into broader development planning rather than treating environmental protection as a separate policy issue.

For farmers, for example, climate-resilient agricultural practices, improved weather information, efficient irrigation and drought-tolerant crops can help reduce vulnerability to changing weather conditions.

Similarly, investment in renewable energy, resilient infrastructure, early-warning systems and improved waste management can support communities while creating opportunities for businesses and employment.

Financing and Innovation Remain Critical

The forum’s discussions highlighted the importance of mobilising private capital and strengthening the role of development finance institutions in supporting climate-related investments.

Such institutions can help reduce investment risks, improve project preparation and provide financing structures that encourage businesses to participate in sustainable development initiatives.

However, stakeholders also need clear policies, reliable regulations and transparent implementation arrangements to give investors confidence and ensure that projects deliver lasting benefits.

Nwangwu said the Africa Climate Forum was designed to promote cooperation through four complementary areas: policy dialogue, investment facilitation, innovation and storytelling.

He explained that the initiative aims to connect policymakers, investors, academics, practitioners and development partners to identify practical interventions and address institutional barriers to climate action.

Building a Pan-African Platform

The forum has expanded beyond Nigeria to Accra, Ghana, reflecting its organisers’ ambition to develop a broader continental platform for climate expertise, investment and practical solutions.

Nwangwu also disclosed that Nairobi, Kenya, was being considered as a possible destination for the following year’s mini Climate Forum series.

He said the long-term ambition was to deepen partnerships, widen participation and create a platform through which ideas could become policies, policies could attract investment, and investments could improve the well-being of African communities.

From Commitments to Measurable Results

As African countries confront mounting environmental and development pressures, stakeholders face the challenge of ensuring that climate policies translate into practical improvements for citizens.

A unified approach could help countries share successful initiatives, strengthen regional cooperation, attract funding and adapt solutions to the needs of vulnerable communities.

The success of such efforts, however, will depend on sustained political commitment, reliable financing, accountability and the participation of communities directly affected by climate change.

For Africa, the priority is not only to make stronger climate commitments but also to build the partnerships and institutions needed to turn those commitments into sustainable economic opportunities and lasting environmental protection.
