Global Stocks Fall as AI Chip Sell-Off Drives Investors Towards Safer Assets

Global stock markets fell on Tuesday, October 13, as a sell-off in technology shares, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) chipmakers, unsettled investors and increased demand for government bonds.

Asian markets led the decline, with South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index dropping more than 5 per cent as major semiconductor companies came under pressure. Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) were among the chipmakers affected by concerns over intensifying competition in the AI industry.

Developments involving China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies and cautionary comments from Broadcom’s chief executive added to investor concerns about competition and the outlook for AI-related businesses. US Nasdaq futures also fell, while shares of Nvidia and Micron Technology weakened in premarket trading.

The shift towards safer investments helped push US Treasury yields lower after recent increases. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to around 5.19 per cent as investors reassessed inflation risks and mounting government debt.

Oil prices also declined, while the US dollar weakened as lower bond yields reduced some support for the currency.

European shares moved in the opposite direction, supported by falling oil prices and the region’s lower exposure to major technology stocks.

Investors are now turning their attention to upcoming US inflation figures and earnings reports from major banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup.

The market movements highlight how concerns about AI valuations, competition and economic uncertainty can quickly influence global investment decisions.
