Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has criticised an agreement allowing Russia to supply diesel to the United States, arguing that the deal could provide Moscow with additional funds to continue its war against Ukraine.
Zelenskiy described the agreement as a weak decision by powerful partners and said it risked undermining diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
In a statement on X, he warned that allowing Russia to sell petroleum products would not bring peace, but could encourage further attacks. He called instead for genuine de escalation and reciprocal steps to reduce tensions.
US President Donald Trump said he had reached the agreement during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump said Russia would immediately supply diesel to the United States and global markets, adding that lowering prices for Americans was his highest priority.
The announcement came as a Ukrainian delegation was in the United States for discussions on possible ways to resolve the war.
Speaking to reporters later, Zelenskiy said the arrangement would strengthen Russia financially and questioned whether Ukraine’s participation in diplomatic discussions was being taken seriously by its partners.
He said the agreement risked sending the wrong message at a time when Kyiv was seeking meaningful progress towards ending the conflict.
