Nine people have died in a fatal road crash along the Ijebu-Ode-Benin Expressway in Ogun State, with the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, attributing the incident to speed violation.
The crash occurred at about 4:55pm on Monday around the Bethel area of the Ijebu-Ode-Ore section of the expressway while it was raining and the road pavement was wet.
The accident involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus belonging to Delta Line and a white Sino Truck operated by Bill Gas Solution Ltd.
According to the FRSC, the nine victims comprised three males and six females, and all of them died in the crash. The remains were evacuated to the General Hospital Morgue in Ijebu-Ode, while the vehicles were towed to the Ilese Police Station.
The FRSC rescue team reportedly arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the distress call.
The Ogun State Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to exercise maximum caution when driving during rainfall.
He advised motorists to obey speed limits, maintain safe following distances and avoid reckless driving.
Ogunjobi warned that speeding on wet roads is especially dangerous because reduced tyre grip and visibility can make it difficult for drivers to control their vehicles or stop safely.
The FRSC condoled with the families of the victims and urged motorists to make road safety a priority.
