The Nigeria Premier Football League is set to introduce Friday night fixtures as part of a revised matchday schedule designed to give supporters more opportunities to watch top-flight football.
The new arrangement will begin on Matchday Nine when Shooting Stars host Ranchers Bees at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan on Friday, October 16. The encounter is scheduled to kick off at 6pm.
The NPFL will also introduce earlier kick-off times for selected Saturday and Sunday matches as the season progresses, providing greater variety to the league’s fixture calendar.
The changes are expected to offer supporters more flexible options while creating additional opportunities for clubs and commercial partners to strengthen fan engagement.
Friday night football could particularly appeal to supporters who are unable to attend traditional weekend afternoon matches, potentially helping clubs improve matchday attendance.
For Shooting Stars, the clash with Ranchers Bees will be their second Friday home fixture of the season. The Ibadan side previously hosted Inter Lagos on a Friday during the opening matchday, securing a 2-1 victory.
The introduction of evening fixtures represents another step in the league’s efforts to modernise its matchday presentation and make domestic football more attractive to supporters.
With the NPFL historically dominated by weekend afternoon kick-offs, the revised schedule is expected to bring greater variety to the competition.
League organisers will be hoping the new format translates into stronger stadium attendance, increased fan engagement and a more vibrant matchday experience when Friday night football officially begins on October 16.
