Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will have no contractual rematch clause when the two British heavyweight stars finally meet in their highly anticipated showdown on December 11.
The former world champions are scheduled to settle their long-running rivalry at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, with the blockbuster encounter potentially becoming one of the final fights of their careers.
Fury’s manager, Spencer Brown, confirmed that the agreement covers only one fight, although he did not rule out the possibility of a second meeting if circumstances make it possible.
“Contractually, there’s one fight. There’s one big fight. It was designed for that,” Brown told Sky Sports.
He added that a victory could keep the winner’s career moving, while defeat could force the loser to seriously consider retirement given their stage in the sport.
“Whoever loses here, where do they go? That’s a tough one,” Brown said.
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, also confirmed the absence of a rematch clause, describing the contest as “one fight, one-off.”
However, Hearn acknowledged that the magnitude of the event could eventually lead to another encounter if the bout proves to be a major success.
“If it’s a blockbuster, I’m sure they’ll do it again,” Hearn said.
Hearn also expects the importance of the fight to push both heavyweights to their limits, regardless of how the contest develops.
“Both guys could be down in this fight but they’re so desperate to win you can guarantee they’ll be climbing and crawling off that canvas to win the fight,” he added.
With no guaranteed rematch, the December 11 clash carries even greater significance, with both Joshua and Fury facing the possibility that their long-awaited rivalry could be decided in a single night.
