The National Peace Committee, chaired by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has warned President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and other political actors against inflammatory and inciting campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The committee raised concerns over 60 election related incidents recorded across the country between August 19 and September 19, including political violence, intimidation, threats, attacks on political activities and misinformation.
In a statement jointly signed by Abdulsalami and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the committee urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to stop spreading false, inflammatory or inciting information.
The committee said political actors should campaign peacefully, verify information before publishing it and prevent their supporters from engaging in intimidation, unlawful conduct or disruption of political activities.
It also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to strengthen monitoring of political campaigns and ensure compliance with the Electoral Act 2026 and relevant regulations.
The panel urged security agencies to intensify investigations into electoral offences and political violence, stressing that the National Peace Accord signed by political actors was a serious public commitment and not merely a ceremonial declaration.
According to the committee, misinformation and disinformation accounted for 24 of the 60 incidents monitored, representing 40 per cent. Attacks and disruptions to political activities accounted for 13 incidents, while intimidation and threats made up 10 cases.
The committee warned that continued inflammatory rhetoric and other forms of political misconduct could restrict participation, weaken public confidence in the electoral system and increase tensions as the 2027 election approaches.
