A Russian drone strike has hit Kyiv’s Northern Bridge for a second consecutive day, disrupting infrastructure in the Ukrainian capital as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived for a surprise visit.
The bridge, also known as the Pivnichnyi Bridge, was struck on Sunday morning after coming under attack the previous day. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the latest strike damaged the roadway and a heating main, affecting hot-water supplies in the northeastern Desnyanskyi district.
The attack came as air-raid sirens sounded across Kyiv shortly after Merz arrived by train to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Merz reaffirmed Germany’s support for Ukraine, saying the country could continue to rely on German assistance. He also urged Russia to end the war and said Germany’s security was linked to the outcome of the conflict.
The latest attack forms part of an intensifying Russian campaign against bridges and other critical infrastructure in Kyiv. Several bridges across the Dnipro River have been targeted in recent days, causing traffic disruptions and raising concerns about the city’s transport and logistics networks.
Merz and Zelenskyy also visited a building of Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences damaged in an earlier Russian drone strike.
