A 25 year old worker, identified as Bakeru Iwal, has died after part of an old building collapsed during demolition at Otolo Nnewi, in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when the section of the building suddenly collapsed, trapping Iwal under the debris. He was reportedly among the workers carrying out the demolition.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying officers from the Otolo Divisional Headquarters responded to the scene, cordoned off the area and commenced preliminary investigations.

Police said Iwal’s remains were evacuated to a mortuary pending autopsy and other necessary examinations.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Ama, directed that the circumstances surrounding the incident be thoroughly investigated and that the investigation determine whether anyone bears responsibility.

The police urged members of the public to remain calm while the investigation continues.
