Public service workers under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council have declared a three-day nationwide warning strike over worsening economic hardship, rising living costs and demands for improved wages.

The industrial action is scheduled to begin at midnight on Friday, October 2, and end on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

The council directed workers in federal, state and local government services to participate in the strike, following what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to address demands submitted to President Bola Tinubu on September 21.

Among the workers’ demands are a reduction in petrol prices to N500 per litre, an immediate wage award to cushion the effects of economic hardship and the establishment of a tripartite committee to commence negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

The council said the economic and mental hardship facing workers and their dependants had become increasingly difficult, urging its national and state structures to mobilise members for the action.

The planned strike follows an earlier ultimatum issued to the Federal Government, which expired on September 30 without the council’s demands being addressed.

The JNPSNC comprises several public sector unions, including the Nigeria Civil Service Union, Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria and National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives.
