The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled a new operational strategy aimed at strengthening preparations and identifying potential challenges ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, announced the initiative while opening a two day Strategic Operational Workshop for the commission’s Administrative Secretaries in Lagos.
Under the new strategy, INEC will deploy an Administrative Secretary Master Operational Tracker Template to provide real time information on the readiness of its offices across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The system will be linked to the Election Monitoring and Support Centre to track key areas including the distribution of election materials, personnel training and other operational preparations.
Amupitan said the initiative would enable the commission to identify and address potential problems before they disrupt the electoral process. He described Administrative Secretaries as the “engine room” of INEC’s state level operations and urged them to maintain strict operational discipline.
The strategy will focus on voter registration and Permanent Voter Card distribution, logistics and election materials, electoral technology, human resources and financial compliance.
INEC will also strengthen preparations involving the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, INEC Results Viewing Portal and Candidate Registration and Results Management System.
Amupitan said lessons from recent off cycle elections, particularly the Osun State election, would be incorporated into a national standard for the 2027 polls.
According to INEC’s timetable, the final register of voters is expected to be published on January 11, 2027, while the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16. Governorship and State House of Assembly elections are expected to hold on March 6.
