The Federal Government has again cancelled Nigeria’s traditional Independence Day military parade, making 2026 the second consecutive year the event has not featured as part of the country’s anniversary celebrations.
The decision comes as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence anniversary on October 1, with this year’s celebrations designed to be low-key. The official programme includes a public lecture and a nationwide broadcast by President Bola Tinubu, alongside other religious and commemorative activities.
The parade was also cancelled in 2025, when the government announced the decision two days before the October 1 celebration. At the time, the government said the cancellation did not diminish the significance of the anniversary and confirmed that other scheduled activities would proceed.
The 2025 cancellation later became linked in public discussion to allegations of a planned military coup, although the authorities initially gave an official explanation that did not cite a coup plot as the reason for cancelling the parade. Subsequent developments have seen military personnel accused in the alleged plot brought before legal proceedings.
This year’s decision therefore marks a continued departure from the traditional large-scale military display associated with Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations.
