Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has urged Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech and provocation as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yusuf made the call in his Independence Day message as Nigeria marks its 66th anniversary, stressing the importance of national unity and peaceful coexistence.
The governor urged political actors and their supporters to conduct their activities responsibly and avoid actions capable of threatening public order. He also called for political competition centred on ideas, policies, records and programmes rather than intimidation or personal attacks.
Yusuf further appealed to citizens, media practitioners, bloggers and social media users to verify information before sharing it and avoid spreading misinformation, rumours and inflammatory content that could heighten tensions.
He also called on security agencies to remain professional and impartial throughout the campaign period, while urging political parties and campaign organisations to comply with lawful requirements.
The governor said political differences should not undermine the relative peace in Kano, stressing that political competition would eventually end while citizens would continue to live together.
His appeal comes as preparations for the 2027 elections gain momentum, with campaigns expected to intensify across the country in the coming months.
