FG’s electricity subsidy reduces by N37bn over poor offtake

The Federal Government’s electricity subsidy obligation has reduced by N37bn due to a decline in electricity offtake, according to recent industry data.

The reduction means the government is spending less on bridging the gap between the cost of electricity supplied by power producers and the amount paid by consumers through regulated tariffs.

Industry reports indicate that weaker electricity offtake contributed to the lower subsidy requirement during the period under review. The development reflects challenges in the power sector, including inadequate demand and limitations across generation, transmission and distribution.

The Federal Government has continued to provide financial support to the electricity market as tariffs paid by many consumers remain below the cost of supplying power.

The reduction in subsidy spending comes as authorities pursue reforms aimed at improving the financial sustainability of the electricity market. The government has also been working toward increasing private sector participation and investment in power infrastructure.

Nigeria’s electricity sector has continued to face challenges, including insufficient generation capacity, gas supply constraints, transmission limitations and distribution losses.

Lower offtake can reduce subsidy obligations, but it may also indicate that less electricity is being consumed or delivered to end users.

The latest development therefore highlights the link between electricity demand, sector revenues and the amount of subsidy required from government.
